Welcome!

The 7th Zone is an online editorial covering all things Pop and Geek culture, especially video games and Apple products. It is maintained by a peculiar and ostensibly neurotic trio, which include the quirky Grand Theft Auto fan Andric, the pilgrim anti-bigot (we know it's paradoxical) Samuel, and you-know-he's-charming ZS. Needless to say, we are fans of Bungie and Halo, Rockstar Games and Grand Theft Auto, Star Wars, the Xbox 360, iPods, and Macs. On the scale of 'hopeless romantic' to 'cynic', there is an always-present doubt on where each of us lie. We never tell, so don't ask.

Linkin Park, The Catalyst Music Video

This came out quite a while ago, the song was out before then. I didn’t like it alot at that time but the more i watch this video and the more I listen to it, it’s actually really amazing to listen to. From a gamer’s point of view of course. It feels alot like Fallout 3.

Apple event: New iPods and Apple TV & iTunes 10

Apple has announced new iPods, a new second generation Apple TV, and iTunes 10 (along with the new “social network for music”, Ping).

First and foremost, in iPod territory:
Firstly, we the iPod shuffle combines the best of both worlds from its previous two incarnations. The new iPod shuffle now comes with buttons, VoiceOver, playlists, and Genius Mixes, and is a lot thinner, lighter and smaller than usual. It also comes with a clip. Available in 5 different colours, it will cost US$49 with a 2GB capacity.

The new iPod nano, which also comes with a clip, is now square and multitouch-based, doing away with the clickwheel entirely. It uses the familiar interface found in the iOS, but in a rudimentary form. It is 46% smaller and 42% lighter, Steve Jobs claims. Coming with a supposed 24 hours battery life, it is perhaps the biggest jump the iPod nano has made since it was first introduced.

Lastly, a new iPod touch which is thinner, and which comes with most of the technologies found in the iPhone 4, has been announced. It comes with a Retina display, the Apple A4 chip, a Gyroscope, a dual camera setup with FaceTime, and 40 hours of music playback.

Secondly, in iOS territory:

iOS 4.1 and 4.2 have also been announced and previewed. iOS 4.1 will come with a prominently new feature in the Camera app, “High Dynamic Range”. HDR technology will feature automatic exposure correction in photographs. iOS 4.1 will be released for the iPhone and the iPod touch next week. iOS 4.2 has been announced for the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch, and will be out in November. It is unclear what iOS 4.2 will bring to the iPhone and iPod touch, but it will bring many of the current iOS 4 features in the iPhone and iPod touch to the iPad.

Next, Apple has announced a new Apple TV.

The new Apple TV will be a fourth the size of the original, and will feature a new Cloud-based interface that is built upon TV Show and Movie rentals: consumers will not be able to purchase content from their Apple TV, but they will be able to do so on their computers (Mac/PC) or iOS devices (iPhone, iPod touch or iPad) and stream it over to the Apple TV using the newly-announced AirPlay, the successor to AirTunes. Jobs demoed streaming of movies from the iPad to the Apple TV, which looked intuitive. The new Apple TV, based upon streaming, will cost $99.

Lastly, Apple has announced a new version of their media-management application on Windows and Mac OS X, iTunes 10.
Firstly, iTunes 10 will feature a prominent “hybrid” list feature to organise albums more efficiently in list view. For albums with more than 5 songs, album art will be displayed in addition to the album name. Next, iTunes 10 will also come with some interface changes. The most obvious one would be its new icon. It also has a slightly sleeker look and feel. Lastly, Apple has announced the new “Ping” social networking service. It is intended to complement other major social networks such as Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr. It launches today with iTunes 10, and will also be available for iOS devices. It is dubbed as the “social network for music” and follows a similar user interface paradigm to Facebook and Twitter: it will allow users to share their listening tastes, post audio and video, “follow” other users and be “followed” (à la Twitter), and discover concerts around them.

iTunes will be available for download soon. You can also find more information on the new iPod lineup and Apple TV at Apple’s website.

Bungie updates us on Halo: Reach – behind the scenes of “Deliver Hope” and a modicum of information bites

In Bungie’s latest weekly update, a host of information and media pertaining to Halo: Reach has been unleashed, with but three weeks to its release on September 14th. Bungie’s Halo swan song looks better by the day, as developers at Bungie reveal more juicy bits on the game closer to release.

Did you know Halo is 10 years old? You probably already know that, but it sure has come a long way!

What fans might find most interesting would be the “Behind The Scenes” look at Halo: Reach’s latest live action short film, “Deliver Hope”. The picture below is right out of Bungie’s latest update.

We will spare you the agony of sifting through walls of witty text for this week’s Bungie lowdown on Halo: Reach. Here’s Bungie’s FAQ section, quelling the curioisity of many inquisitive fans.

Q. Will Halo: Reach be region-free?

A. According to Domenic, Halo: Reach is “world signed,” meaning you can play any regional copy in any region on any retail Xbox 360.

Q. Not including Firefight maps, are there more or less multiplayer maps compared to pre-DLC Halo 3? (Forge World only counts as one map.)

A. There are eight multiplayer maps on the disc and five Forge World map variants: Asylum, Hemorrhage, Paradiso, Pinnacle, and The Cage. (The latter most certainly do count, our designers put a lot of time and effort into them and they play like a dream. One of those dreams where you stumble onto a pile of money, only in this dream you get to wake up and keep the cash.)

Q. How does unlocking armor from Waypoint work?

A. You download and launch Waypoint, it runs a background check on your gamertag for the necessary career requirements, and then it unlocks the armor you qualify for automatically. It’s like magic, and as Luke mentioned in an earlier update (bless his heart), the additional (but still awesome) armor pieces will only be displayed in your Armory if you’ve already earned and unlocked them.

Q. Can we specify hill shapes besides cylinders and boxes, like maybe ellipses or triangles?

A. The options are Cylinder, Box, and None. You can control the radius and both the upper and lower limits of the hill, but triangles, parallelograms, and various other complex geometrical shapes are unfortunately completely impossible to create. Which means, sadly, that none of us will ever be able to experience King of the Dodecahedron.

Q. Can we customize campaign options, similar to Firefight?

A. You can modify the experience through scoring, difficulty settings, and the thirteen immediately available skulls (don’t worry, you’ll have plenty of other *things* to hunt for in each game mode). And of course, your opponents will now scale in difficulty depending on the number of players in your game.

But nope, no infinite ammo or unlimited armor abilities in Campaign.

Q. What might the exclusive Digital Content for Legendary owners be?

A. It might be developer commentary. It might also be Gwildor’s Cosmic Key. Only time will tell!

Q. Theater 2.0!

A. The theater experience remains largely unaltered from its already robust predecessor, but we did implement a few choice tweaks and bug fixes. Most notably, you can now rewind Campaign and Firefight Films, just like you can in multiplayer, and all modes will now support Film Clips.

Q. Armor effects and achievement point values.

A. There are a number of Armor Effects in the game that you can unlock if you’re willing to part ways with a whole mess of credits. The most expensive effect is 2,000,000 credits.

There are 49 achievements for a total of 1,000 gamerscore. They break down like this:

  • 5 Doctor, Doctor
  • 10 That’s a Knife
  • 10 I See You Favor a .45
  • 10 An Elegant Weapon…
  • 10 Swap Meet
  • 10 A Spoonful of Blamite

  • 10 You Flew Pretty Good
  • 10 Into the Howling Dark
  • 10 Dust and Echoes
  • 10 This is Not Your Grave…
  • 10 Send Me Out…with a Bang
  • 25 They’ve Always Been Faster
  • 25 Two Corpses in One Grave
  • 25 Banshees, Fast and Low
  • 25 Your Heresy Will Stay Your Feet
  • 25 If They Came to Hear Me Beg
  • 25 Wake Up, Buttercup
  • 25 Tank Beats Everything
  • 25 Lucky Me
  • 5 KEEP IT CLEAN
  • 10 I Didn’t Train to Be a Pilot
  • 5 Be My Wingman, Anytime
  • 10 Yes, Sensei
  • 10 Skunked!
  • 5 What’s a Killing Spree?
  • 10 Crowd Control

  • 10 A New Challenger
  • 10 Make it Drizzle
  • 5 Cool File, Bro
  • 10 Lemme Upgrade Ya
  • 10 One Down, 51 to Go

Q. Will the Fuel Rod Gun ever make an appearance in matchmaking?

A. You can add the Fuel Rod Gun to Custom Maps, but no, it’s unlikely that you’ll ever see the FRG in Matchmaking. According to hater of fun and hot dog eating champion, Dave Gasca, slow moving projectiles can play havoc with multiplayer networking in a disturbingly wide variety of ways, making the experience less than fun for everybody involved. Even though it would likely be fine 95% of the time, the 5% of the time that it acted a fool would result in you peppering us with insults on the Internet. We’re just acting proactively to avoid your stinging verbal barbs.

Since Campaign and Firefight run on a different networking model altogether, the Fuel Rod Gun is all systems go for both of those modes.

Q. Have they fixed saving films in the post game lobby, ala one single button click in the Halo 3 Beta?

A. The Halo 3 Beta single click was an elegant solution and its ultimate omission is still a sore subject for some of the team. Thanks for opening up the wound, Professor. The reality is that once you start adding in the layers of complexity from multiple modes, lobbies, and player configurations (i.e. splitscreen), the UI and engineering work involved in making single button press a permanent fixture across the board became too unwieldy.

The good news is that while you still don’t have a single button press post game, you can pull up your File Browser by pressing Start in any lobby, allowing you to save and upload your most recent games from the menu without having to drop out of the party.

Red Dead Redemption: ‘Liars and Cheats’ Pack Out September 21st and More DLC News

Rockstar Games will be releasing the previously announced ‘Liars and Cheats’ downloadable content pack for Red Dead Redemption on the 21st of September worldwide, as reported by Rockstar Games’ online news front, the Rockstar Games News Wire.

Details of the to-be-released pack follow:

The Liars and Cheats Pack will contain a great range of new highly-requested features to expand the Free Roam world including Multiplayer Poker and Liar’s Dice, as well as a brand new Competitive Multiplayer gameplay mode. The Liars and Cheats Pack will also include the content previously announced as the Free Roam Pack. The Free Roam Pack was originally planned as a free download, but due to the platform networks’ restrictions on numbers of free packs we can give away (and our promise to bring you the free Hunting and Trading Outfits Pack – more on that below), we have instead added it to the Liars and Cheats Pack as one Free Roam release boasting the following features and more:

Multiplayer Poker and Liar’s Dice Games
One of the most fan-requested features comes to multiplayer.

Multiplayer Horse Races
Ride out against your friends and foes online – with mounted combat guns blazing.

The Explosive Rifle
A devastatingly destructive new weapon with its own new single-player and multiplayer challenges.

7 New Gang Hideouts
Posse up and take on the new Hideouts together to level up quickly.

4 New Hunting Grounds
New Hunting Grounds are now visible on the map for all to see, with some of the most action-packed wildlife hunting yet.

Stronghold Competitive Multiplayer Mode
Teams take turns in attack and defense in multi-tiered Competitive games.

Posse Scoring and Leaderboards
Compare stats with other posses and compete to see who are the kings of the Free Roam frontier.

Plus, 15 additional multiplayer characters from the Red Dead Redemption storyline are being made available as multiplayer characters, and more all-new Achievements and Trophies.

This pack will be released on September 21st worldwide for download on both PlayStation Network ($9.99) and Xbox LIVE (800 Microsoft Points). Stay tuned for lots more detail on the content in this pack including first screens and more.

In addition, two new downloadable content packs will be released for Red Dead Redemption following September’s ‘Liars and Cheats’, namely the Single Player-focused ‘Undead Nightmare’ pack which will bring a new campaign for John Marston revolving around zombies, and the free Hunting and Trading Outfits Pack for both Single Player and Multiplayer, bringing the previously revealed special pre-order bonus outfits back into the game.

Unleashed upon the world of Red Dead Redemption, the Undead Nightmare Pack will feature an entirely new single-player campaign that follows John Marston as he tries to find a cure for the highly infectious zombie plague that has spread across the frontier.

In addition to the lengthy single-player adventure, The Undead Nightmare Pack features brand new gameplay mechanics, weapons, zombie animals, mythical creatures and even a brand new secret location.

All this, plus some new multiplayer modes and much more to be revealed in the weeks ahead. The Undead Nightmare Pack will be available simultaneously for download via PlayStation Network ($9.99) and Xbox LIVE (800 Microsoft Points). We’ll have lots more info soon.

Additionally, we are going to be bringing you some free downloadable goodies in the next few weeks including the anticipated Hunting and Trading Outfits Pack which will give everyone the Savvy Merchant and Expert Hunter Outfits and related Challenges, plus special compatibility to enable everyone online to see the Red Dead Revolver multiplayer character skins being used by those who have purchased any of the DLC – we will have full details on this very soon.

We are stoked. With Mafia II already out, and Halo: Reach slated for the 14th of September, Fall 2010 seems to be off to a great start for gamers!

Ashtar Command performs “Deadman’s Gun” live

“Deadman’s Gun”, a song written and performed by Ashtar Command, is a song prominently featured in Red Dead Redemption’s soundtrack, as one of four contemporary songs included. Like the rest of the songs heard in Red Dead Redemption, it captures the tone of John Marston’s epic adventure (and tragic story of redemption) perfectly, but even more so as it encapsulates the story perfectly as well. It is played in the end credits of Red Dead Redemption.

Ashtar Command has recorded a live version of the song, and it is available for viewing/listening on YouTube. “Deadman’s Gun” is available as part of the Red Dead Redemption Original Soundtrack, which can be purchased from Amazon and iTunes.

In related news, Rockstar Games has also released new artwork in honour of the Legends & Killers downloadable content pack’s release last week.

Dr. Catherine Halsey to make an appearance in Halo: Reach?

In Bungie’s latest ViDoc, “A Spartan Will Rise”, we are introduced to the members of the Noble team, as narrated by what sounds like Cortana. But we know it wasn’t Cortana. Could it have been Dr. Catherine Halsey, the voice and personality of which Cortana is modelled after? This would mean that she would make her first canon appearance in a Halo game.

Halo: Reach will be released in about a month’s time. Have you pre-ordered your copy?

Jailbreak released for iPhone 4 and other iOS4 devices

Today, comex released the second incarnation of jalbreak.me, a web-based jailbreak solution for iOS devices. Currently, it will jailbreak all iPod touch, iPhone and iPad models to the latest firmware with just a single swipe of the finger. Users will need to access the website at the URL http://jailbreakme.com, and ‘Slide to Jailbreak’, afterwhich, the device will be jailbroken with Cydia installed.

Presently, “Jailbreak Me” is the easiest jailbreak solution hitherto, even trumping George Hotz blackra1n utility, which required a computer. It also provides an untethered solution for all iOS devices. It is based on a software exploit that was found a few months back, but withheld to the benefit of the community such that Apple wouldn’t patch the exploit for the iPhone 4 and iPad.

Now that the embargo is lifted, chaos will indeed ensue.
